Progress Notes and the IEP

When holding IEP meetings, one thing that needs to be addressed is when progress on goals will be reported to parents.  I want to clarity two issues here. First, how often progress is reported to parents is an IEP team decision. Second, we must provide them, at minimum, as often as gen ed provides grades. So, at the high school for example, grades are done on a semester schedule so progress notes are provided (at minimum) on that same schedule which happens to be two times per year.  If the team feels that progress on a goal or on all goals needs to be provided more often, that should be indicated on the IEP and those progress notes should be sent and filed at the times indicated on the IEP.

We do not need to put specific dates on the IEP when filling in the “When progress will be reported to parents” portion of the goal page. Stating the months would be appropriate (January and June for example which follows the semester schedule).
